HATHA YOGA
Hatha Yoga is the system of physical exercises refined over aeons into postures with very specific movements and equally specific purposes.
“HATHA” is a compound Sanskrit word. HA meaning sun or positive polarity and THA meaning moon or negative polarity. HATHA YOGA is about
balancing these energies within our bodies.
Yoga is unique in that it works on the muscles and joints of the body as well as the mind, the internal organs and glands (endocrine system). The
Endocrine system controls our hormone levels e.g. adrenalin, insulin, thyroxin as well as the mineral content of our blood. Our immune system,
mood swings, metabolic rate are all affected by the balancing effect the postures, have on these glands. We are affected on a physical, mental
and emotional level.
Through the postures, we gradually stretch and strengthen the muscles, mobilize all the joints and relax physical tension. This physical release at
the same time brings about a release of emotional trauma. Emotions that are repressed tend to become stored in the muscles and organs as
physical ‘hardness’. By releasing this hardness, the emotional tension held there is also released.
In a yoga session every system in the body is given a boost, including the lymphatic, circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems.
Even the simple breathing exercises (pranayama) performed during yoga sessions can have a dramatic effect on our bodies. Breathing correctly,
for example, increases the oxygen levels in our blood which means more energy for digestion, the brain, the organs and the muscles.
Yoga, done properly, is not a competition, not even with one’s self. It’s a matter of doing WHAT YOU CAN at any given moment.
Quite simply yoga makes you feel good. It’s relaxing, It’s energizing, It’s strengthening. With regular yoga practice, this pervasive yet subtle sense
of feeling good carries over into the whole of your life.
